Have an asphalt-related question? We have the answer! Check out our FAQs below to learn more about our company and services.
The existing driveway should be stable, compacted rock, as clean rock is not good for asphalt pavement. Also, there must be good drainage from other surfaces (garage floor, sidewalks, concrete aprons) to avoid puddling. An excavation of the existing driveway may be required if there isn't a sufficient base or sufficient drainage. A new base, 8” of rolled base rock, must be established before paving the driveway. Finally, your driveway can be paved with 3” or more of asphalt by professional paving companies.
If the current asphalt has deteriorated, but the base seems solid, the driveway may be a candidate for an overlay. In this case, water must be able to drain from adjacent surfaces after the addition of the overlay. Oftentimes, asphalt needs to be removed in these areas to accommodate the new 2” overlay while still being able to drain. Sealcoating is a maintenance procedure to close up the pores and smaller cracks in the pavement. It also gives a refreshed look to the pavement. The pavement should be at least 6 months old and the seal coating should be applied by professional paving companies between April and October.
At Mid River Asphalt, Inc., we do not have a general price. With so many variables (location, preparation, layout, traffic, etc.) we prefer to inspect the proposed area and from there establish a custom price for the individual project. Mid River Asphalt, Inc. can seal many of the cracks in your pavement, although the cracks will not go away. We usually use a machine designed to heat rubber up to about 400 degrees, clean debris from the cracks, and apply the heated rubber with the pressurized gun. The material typically overlaps the surface of the pavement. Immediately after the material is applied, it is smoothed out with a squeegee. This usually results in a 3”-4” ribbon over the crack but does not eliminate the cracks. For more information from one of the most trusted paving companies in the area, contact our team today!
